Hexagram 35 - Radiance

Radiance.

The spirit bestows blessings upon the sage to

Benefit all.

Blessings received and passed on.

Structure:  Fire 7 above.  Earth 5 below.   Devotion and support below, great clarity above.

Ideogram:  Sun and reaching, the daylight world.

Image:  The sun rises above the earth with ever widening clarity and expansion.  The more the sun rises, the brighter it becomes.   What is innately light rises over that which darkens.

Entanglement with self-cherishing, hostility for others, and worldly concerns[1] shades the spirit.  The wise free themselves from these obstructions.  To further develop their devotion, they expand and extend their openness to the spirit.  The sacred presence rises ever higher over their lives, and the sage passes on to others the many spiritual blessings to benefit all.

When the spirit and humanity act in concert, wisdom grows.  An unobscured spirit and a devoted sage create the conditions in which great progress flourishes, like the rapid and easy progress of the rising sun with ever widening expansion and illumination.  The reward of devotion is bringing to life the ways of the spirit within the world.

The wise never forget their dependence upon the spirit for their achievements within the world, knowing that they but reflect the spirit’s blessings.  They do not take credit for the work nor feel they deserve to indulge the self.  Such leaders do not abuse their influence for self-benefit but persist in their efforts to benefit all.

The wise yield to the spirit in the midst of difficulties.  They persistently hold to the good as they have faith in its process and know that the path is gradual yet certain.  Over time, the unreceptive becomes receptive and learn the ways of the spiritual path.

This hexagram points to times of rapid and easy advance with an ever widening expansion and clarity on all sides.  Conditions make it easy to bring to life the ways of the spirit within the world.  We must exert ourselves in such propitious times as these moments of opportunity do not last.  The light will fade.  Yet, when we can, we must shine.

Line 1:  The line does not try to win confidence of others regardless of the situation.  It remains calm and cheerful, resisting the pressure of others to advance.  The line goes its solitary way on the path of duty and awaits the time that will surely come.

The weak try too hard to gain the confidence of others through advancing and lose their discipline.  They become frustrated by difficulties and fail to fulfill their obligations.

Line 2:  The gentle and harmonious line has no urge to advance on its own.  Although it at first does not receive support from others, the line develops its enlightened qualities.  Such a path ensures that it will eventually receive the needed support to advance.

Difficulties in connecting with supportive partner halt the line’s progress.  The line persists developing its spiritual path although in sorrow.  Eventually its changes as do the conditions, and it connects with partners.

Line 3:  The line strives onward in association with others who support it. The line, at the top of trigram representing obedience, follows the clarity of the upper trigram.  Its example accords with the other advancing lines and regret vanishes on all sides as all are aligned with the ways of the spirit.

Line 4:  The line represents those who personally benefit from having a responsible position, not a secure position.  The line fears and hates the lines below as they are certain to advance because of their devotion to the spiritual path.  It is always dangerous to fear and hate others.

The line advances like a rodent that hides by day and acts unseen at night.  Fear, jealousy, and hate always fill the line. It greedily occupies the wrong place.  In this time, the line’s selfishness comes to light, and others clearly see its selfish actions, placing the line in danger.

Line 5:  The line has overcome its self-cherishing and hostility for others and is selfless.  All cause for suffering comes to an end as it has let go of what held it back from the spirit.  The line moves away from the self and toward the blessings of being with the spirit.

Line 6:  The strong top line advances impulsively by force, wanting to conquer the external domain and others.  When firmness peaks, the line stubbornly advances with ferocity and loses balance.  Firmness at the peak of clarity relies too much on its own intelligence and dissatisfaction with the situation.  It would have been best for the line to use its firmness to control itself and to conquer its own domain.

[1] Worldly concerns are the amoral ways in which the selfish willingly harm others for self-benefit and then ignore the suffering they cause.  Selfish individuals seek power and domination over others and willingly use violence to do so.  The selfish accumulate wealth through the unlimited exploitation and ultimate destruction of people, other life forms, and the Earth.  The selfish seek the attention of others.  The selfish consume as much as they can and seek constant distractions from facing the harms they caused others, all life, and the Earth.
